The most important aspect before considering a PG in Germany is to understand the various pros and cons it has to offer.
PROS:
- No Tuition fee.
- Well paid Residency/Job (recovery of spent money while preparation within a year).
- Yearly increment in salary. Upto 2000 Euros Increment from First year (Asisstenzarzt) to Specialist (Facharzt).
- Opportunity to pursue surgical specialties/super specialties or even switch specialties unlike other countries.
- Degree recognized and respected all over Europe, even UK.
- Good opportunity as Germany has relative shortage of doctors.
- The expenditure is very less compared to US, UK and even Indian private seats.
- Many consultancies and Institutes offer good and appropriate training and guidance.
- Residency includes health insurance, pension, disability insurance and job loss insurance which means bad scenarios like disability or an illness wont leave your bank accounts empty.
- Good work culture. People and colleagues are helpful and willing to train you if show interest.
- 30 days of paid workday holidays plus paid sick leave if necessary.
CONS:
- Learning a Foreign language and medical terminology. EVERYTHING I MEAN EVERYTHING DEPENDS ON HOW GOOD YOU CAN SPEAK GERMAN!(This is a must! No alternative.)
- Initial high cost with no guarantee of a residency.
- Lengthy, confusing and complicated procedure.
- No central body, everything is decided by the people examining/interviewing you.(what works for one person may not work out for you)
- Visa issues and delays.
- Consultancies charge too much and work too little.(most of the work can be and has to be done by you)
- Settling in a new country is difficult and challenging.
- Finding a residency can take time and one needs to be persistent.
- Residency is not a centralized process and one needs to learn under multiple doctors sometimes to complete it. (can be a pro as well)
*Personal opinion – Its a risk! That’s for sure. Hence depends upon how willing you are to take it and most importantly stick to it. 2 years of preparation is a long time!
